Claiming they’ve not had a part in the infamous PRISM program, Apple have released a statement hailed “Apple’s Commitment to Customer Privacy” to the public.
Apple have gone the extra mile to ensure customer peace of mind by claiming they’ve never released user data to any form of government agency. They’ve also stated that any time the government has requested user data, they’ve needed a court order to get anywhere.
Apparently, the government are asking for user data more than we thought. According to Apple, they have received as many as 5,000 requests for user data from US law enforcement agencies between December 1st 2012 and May 31st 2013.
A quote from Apple read “Regardless of the circumstances, our legal team conducts an evaluation of each request and, only if appropriate, we retrieve and deliver the narrowest possible set of information to the authorities.” meaning that they are trying to provide users with as much peace of mind as possible.
Earlier reports this month indicate that companies such as Yahoo, Microsoft, Google, Apple and a selection of other internet companies have been asked for user data as part of the government’s PRISM scheme.
